The holiday season is a magical time as children and adults alike eagerly wait for presents to appear under the tree. Unfortunately, there are many who need extra help to ensure they experience the joy of tearing open presents on Christmas morning. That’s why the senior residents of Calder Woods recently collected toys and other special gifts to fulfill the wishes of the children on their angel tree benefitting Buckner Children’s Village. In advance of Christmas, residents did their holiday shopping with their angels in mind and gathered together for a wrapping party at the community to prepare the gifts for their recipients. The toys were then delivered to the Buckner Children’s Village by Santa’s special helpers from Calder Woods. For residents of Calder Woods like Sherry Adams, the angel tree is a unique opportunity to give back and impact the lives of others.

“Fulfilling the wishes of a child in need is incredibly meaningful,” said Adams. “I spent 27 years as a first-grade teacher, and those children are constant reminders to serve others and listen. It is a priority of mine to do what I can to make sure children feel the joy of Christmas.”

As a resident ambassador for Calder Woods, Adams lead the charge with her fellow residents to ensure each of the angels receives the items on their Christmas lists this year. According to Adams, she has learned over the years that experiencing the world through the eyes of child provides a sense of understanding and joy. She believes this is especially true during the holiday season and looks forward to knowing there will be presents under the tree for each of these children come Christmas morning.

“At Calder Woods, we believe in the importance of giving back to our community and coming together to do so,” said Ben Mazzara, executive director of Calder Woods. “The holidays are a time for everyone to reflect on their blessings and share them with others. We’re honored to have compassionate and giving residents, like Sherry Adams, who are committed to helping children. We hope that each of our angels will know they are loved and cared for this Christmas.”
