Practicing Privacy in Urban Areas

Quincy, Weymouth, and Braintree are great places to live. Lots of shops, restaurants, and activities attract busy families and singles to these densely populated areas. This means space is always at a premium. You may end up closer to your neighbors than you really want to be which can be especially challenging during the summer months when we spend so much time outside. Ready to turn your home and backyard into your own private oasis? Read on.

Good Fences Make Good Neighbors

Fences are the best way to keep pets in and nosy neighbors out. Even if you like your neighbors, a good fence is a great way to create a separation between your public front yard and your more private backyard. A six-foot stockade fence is the gold standard when it comes to backyard privacy. This will offer plenty of solitude from the rest of the neighbors while still being an attractive addition to your home. Other possible options for fencing include vinyl fencing and bamboo fencing, both of which can be made tall enough to offer solitude in an  urban atmosphere.

Turn Down the Noise

Living on a busy street means traffic noise and kids wake up awfully early to play outside during the summertime. Use a fountain to mask neighborhood noise. Flowing water sounds louder the farther it falls and the more tiers that the fountain has so a small table top version may not be big enough to achieve that soothing sound you want. Look for a larger fountain with at least three tiers for the water to flow over. An adjustable pump will allow you to decide how fast the water goes through the fountain so you can control how loud it sounds. You can even make your own.

Dress Your Windows

Don’t forget the most obvious way to increase your privacy- good shades and curtains. Open during the day to let light in and closed at night to cloak your home in quiet. Even sheer curtains will do the trick of obscuring your home at night, but still allow plenty of natural sunshine to come through during the day.  For bedrooms, light blocking shade or blackout curtains will help you sleep peacefully despite streetlights or headlights on your block.

You don’t have to give up private space just to live on the bustling South Shore. Use some of these tricks and let me know how they worked for you. And if you’re still looking for a home to call your own- call me first to get the process started!
