Iknowaguyf you live in The Woodlands, you probably already know that you need to either be a member or have a connection and walking into the clubhouse can sometimes feel a bit like the picture to the left.

If you love to golf, The Woodlands is a great place to lay down your roots. There are more than seven courses throughout The Woodlands between Carlton Woods, The Woodlands Country Club, and Canongate. All of these courses, as I just mentioned, are private. So if you’re not yet willing to drop the kind of cash necessary to knock that ball into the sand, woods, or any body of water visible or not, then you may be thinking of alternatives. Lucky for you, if you’re looking to walk on and play your options are still very good as there are a number of high quality courses within a short drive. This is a list of our favorite courses around The Woodlands, and a short blurb from their website along with links to more information. Without further ado…

Woodforest Golf Club

Woodforest Golf Club is located just a short drive north of The Woodlands. This course is one of my personal favorites in the area for the quality of the course and value. The grass and greens are always carefully maintained and the atmosphere is great for getting a relaxing round in.

“Designed by the PGA’s own Steve Elkington, Woodforest features 27 holes on a spacious course carved through the majestic pines and towering oaks of Northwest Houston. Since 2001 this classic design has appealed to golfers of all skill levels, deeming it a “player’s course.” Facilities include a pro shop, the Sandbagger’s Grille, driving range, separate putting and chipping greens, and fairway and greenside practice bunkers. Daily private and group instruction is also available from their onsite PGA staff. Woodforest Golf Club is open for daily fee play seven days a week.”

Augusta Pines Golf Club

Augusta Pines is just a few minutes south of Carlton Woods featuring 7,041 yards of golf from professional tees totaling a par of 72. Water features here will be sure to keep you on your toes amidst the towering pines, an overall fun course to play.

“Augusta Pines is an 18-hole golf club located in Spring, Texas designed by Tour 18, Inc. The facility features a state-of-the-art practice facility (including six target greens and sand bunkers). The course negotiates mature pines, dogwoods and oaks. The fairways are Baby Bermuda grass, while the greens and tees feature TifEagle. Our dramatic finishing holes are back-to-back island greens, the par-3 seventeenth and par-5 eighteenth. A total of 30 acres of lakes come into play on the eleven of the eighteen holes.”

West Fork Golf & Country Club

West Fork Golf and Country Club is located on Highway 105 in Conroe, a stones throw away from Wedgewood Golf Club (see below) lies West Fork Golf and Country Club. This course offers a challenge for any golfer with well manicured fairways and greens which always makes for a fun outing with friends, or better yet, an escape from the office. Among the many challenges implemented into the design lies three holes with a lake hugging the length of each.

“West Fork Golf & Country Club, an 18-hole championship golf course is cut along the banks of the west fork of the San Jacinto River. The links style course negotiates rolling terrain, towering hardwoods and natural wetlands that border the river. West Fork appeals to golfers who seek generous, rolling fairways and smooth greens. The golf course design extends beyond the natural wildlife, giving the player a sense of comfort and tranquility. Every hole offers a different challenge for the recreational, beginner, and single-digit player. Come out to the new West Fork and experience “purely good golf in the country.”

Cypresswood

 

Cypresswood Golf Club

Cypresswood Golf Club is located in North Houston, just 7 miles from Bush Intercontinental Airport. Featuring two 18-hole courses, the Cypress course totals 6,906 yards from the furthest tees with a par of 72, while the Tradition course boasts 7,220 yards total for an identical par of 72. Cypresswood offers the ability to play two unique courses under one proverbial “roof.” Both courses come with their share of challenges, and as you would expect, are well maintained to ensure a great all around experience.

“Situated on over 600 acres of rolling, heavily wooded terrain along the confluence of Spring and Cypress creeks, this 36-hole golf facility offers two unique golf experiences and the finest of playing conditions. The Cypress course earned Golf Digest’s ranking of the “Best New Course” in 1989. The Tradition course at Cypresswood opened in 1997 and was designed by Keith Foster – a well known golf course architect famous for his work at Walking Stick, Bighorn, The Bandit and The Quarry. The Tradition course has been rated the #1 daily fee course in the Houston area by the Houston Chronicle for four consecutive years. The Tradition Course has also hosted the 1st Stage of the PGA Qualifying Tournament.”

Windrose Golf Club

Windrose Golf Club is located south of The Woodlands just past the intersection of Kuykendahl and FM 2920 in the Windrose community. Windrose features 18 holes totaling 7,203 yards from the professional tees with a par of 72. This is a great, and challenging course which features water on 9 of 18 holes. Definitely a course to challenge your accuracy, and again, and all around fun course to grab some friends for good memories.

“This 18-hole championship layout features lush fairways that meander through century old Oak and Pine trees. Strategic water hazards and substantial sand bunkering add to the aesthetics and integrity of this great track. Risk and reward is the name of the game on the par 3’s, as all of them are guarded by water. WindRose offers a challenge to players of all skill levels looking for some great Houston golf.”

Wedgewood Golf Course

Wedgewood Golf Course is located north of the Woodlands off Highway 105 near Lake Conroe. The 18-hole course features 6,817 yards of golf from the longest tees to a par of 72. Designed by Bruce Devlin/Robert von Hagge, the course opened in 1988. The 18th hole provides a unique opportunity to tee off at the highest elevation point in Montgomery County. Here you’ll experience a vista view of the treelined course and a scenic end to a fun and challenging round of golf.

“Wedgewood’s location boasts Montgomery County’s highest elevation point, which makes for the most scenic views and drastic variety of golf layout in the area. Ancient, old growth forests also line the lush fairways. The greens at Wedgewood are also amazing, fast, undulating and consistent. Our thoughtful layout will challenge experienced golfers while helping newcomers relax as they enjoy this classic game.”
