Thing to Do #359 – Disc Golf in The Woodlands

There are three golf courses immediately within The Woodlands, and a few others that are within close proximity to us.

For those who may not be familiar, disc golf is a game played with special Frisbees, or discs, which must be thrown at a target. Much like golf, the objective is to complete the course with the fewest number of throws of your disc(s).

The game is typically played with a few discs. A golfers bag may contain a long range driver, intermediate range disc, and a putter for shorter shots. Discs can be picked up for $10-30 each depending on the quality at many sporting goods stores. Although modeled after golf, it is not nearly as time sensitive of a game and 18 holes can often be completed in two hours or less.

The most robust course in The Woodlands in terms of tees, landscape, and water hazards is located at the Bear Branch Sports Complex on Research Forest across from the Bear Branch Recreation Center. The course features 18 baskets and a par of 54 for the course. The course begins with the first tee-box next to the sidewalk leading down to the pond on the south side of the park. Water is in play on a number of holes towards the beginning and middle of the round as the course snakes around the perimeter of Bear Branch Sports Park.

Terramont Park is home to the second disc golf course in The Woodlands. Unveiled in 2005 and designed by Jake Walsdorf (the same designer as the Bear Branch course), this course features significant elevation changes and a lightly wooded atmosphere. This course features only nine holes and remains at a par of 27. Most people play the course twice, as understanding the course layout can be a bit tricky for a first-timer with the elevation changes. Be careful though, Terramont is a shared park so keep an eye out for pedestrians and people that may be unaware of disc golfing activity.

Finally, the last course is located at Stonebridge Church, which can be found off Research Forest Drive or accessed from FM 1488. This course offers disc golfers a full round of 18 holes on predominantly flat and semi-wooded acreage. Once again, par remains at 54 with a mix of doglegs and a lake that comes into play on three holes.

If you are new to the sport and want to get some practice in without too many people around, Stonebridge may be your best bet. To read up more about each course and to get some reviews from people who have played it, click the links below.
