The Aurora Health and Wellness Center at Norterre is proud to announce the launch of the MX4 Training System. Led by specially certified instructors, the MX4 program addresses multiple aspects of fitness – cardio, power, strength and endurance – giving attendees a complete workout experience. The program can be modified to suit members of all ability levels and can be scaled to accommodate small or large groups. MX4 combines Matrix-exclusive equipment with original turnkey programming to create a signature group exercise experience that members will invest in and commit to more frequently.

“To remain on the forefront of creating inspiring fitness experiences, we always strive to recognize and embrace industry trends to meet the needs of our members,” said Melissa Ohara, Chief Operating Officer of Norterre. “MX4 is the latest innovation that will enable us to positively impact member engagement and address the expanding popularity of group training. The MX4 Training System is flexible, scalable, and the most innovative group training portfolio in the market. MX4 allows us to create a truly unique, multi-modality training experience.”

The core foundation of the MX4 Small Group Training classes is designed utilizing the Connexus Functional Trainer and select cardio products. Instructors set up and program a dynamic small group class by integrating functional training tools including TRX suspension trainer, Dynamax soft shell medicine ball, flat circular bands, kettlebells, landmine and battle ropes. The course has been accredited by the National Strength and Conditioning Association, the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America, the American Council on Exercise and the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

“The MX4 Small Group Training classes were developed to allow our trainers at The Aurora to deliver unique small group training experiences while removing the burden of constantly having to create new workouts,” said Ron Gochee, General Manager of The Aurora Health & Wellness Center. “This allows our trainers to spend more time coaching, encouraging and guiding class participants to help them get the results they desire. MX4 programming is made up of easily scalable total-body workouts that integrate best-in-class functional training accessories. Participants receive the direction, accountability and motivation they need to get results. The Aurora is no ordinary gym, in fact it’s like working out in resort surroundings.”

The Aurora Health & Wellness Center opened earlier this year and is considered the cornerstone of the Norterre community. The Aurora features unique programming and activities – including more than 100 classes per week – to create the ultimate wellness destination in the Northland. Amenities include an indoor running and walking track, four levels of yoga, group cycling, stretching areas, high-impact studio, warm water exercise, indoor therapy and lap pools, salon and spa services, massage and other therapy treatments as well as a demonstration kitchen emphasizing healthy food preparation and nutrition. Surrounded with original artwork throughout the three levels of fitness and exercise, a grand piano greets members in a two-story reception area. A healthy bistro is available with grab-and-go options and menu items designed to promote heart-healthy and sound nutritional habits.

Memberships range from $69 per month for individuals, $89 for couples, and $109 per month for families. Currently, the enrollment fee is being waived for new members (a value of $100). For membership inquiries, please call 816-479-8930 or go online to norterre.org.

Norterre, the first multigenerational community of its kind, is pleased to announce that the second phase of its health and wellness destination, The Estoria, is now open. The Estoria offers short-term recovery, rehabilitation and skilled nursing in residential suites that overlook the motivational gardens of Performance Park. The Estoria is only steps away from The Aurora Health & Wellness Center, which opened last month and features 65,000 square feet of health, fitness, nutrition and exercise. The Estoria is a four-story, 60-unit sanctuary where people will find the inspiration and motivation to get better, feel better and be stronger. Of the 60 suites available, 40 are dedicated to short-term rehabilitation and recovery, while 20 are dedicated to long-term nursing care.

“We create and support customized rehabilitation plans to help our residents recover as quickly as possible so they can get back to their everyday life and routine,” said Tina Cook, director of nursing at The Estoria. “Rather than confine their rehabilitation to the traditional therapy environment, residents of The Estoria work with licensed physical, occupational, speech and recreational therapists to progress from these initial therapies in our state-of-the-art rehabilitation center to exercising in The Aurora Health & Wellness Center, accessible through a climate-controlled walkway which connects the two buildings. There is no other rehab like this in the city, as each person will stay in a private residence within a larger household with complete freedom to eat when it suits them, sleep when they want and choose how to spend their days. It feels like a home, not a medical institution. At Norterre, people are treated like family because they are not a stranger or just another case on a clipboard. Our team is so excited to be the turning point in people’s journey to recovery, helping them to feel motivated, empowered and in control.”

Residents of The Estoria live in a uniquely designed healthcare Household Model featuring private residential suites sharing beautifully appointed community living spaces and chef-prepared dining. The Estoria’s households feature balconies overlooking the gardens of Performance Park, the central square of the Norterre community where art and music events, tai chi and yoga take place. During the summer, children are welcome to play in the splash pool located within Performance Park, and during the winter the splash pad is converted into an ice-skating rink.

“We are honored to be a part of people’s journey to recovery and will make it as comfortable and enjoyable as possible,” said Steve Shields, chairman and managing partner for Norterre, an Action Pact managed community. “Norterre has always been designed to empower those utilizing our services and to provide them with the leading-edge tools they need to recover faster. Our vision is to bring people together regardless of age, ability or health. This is not just another rehabilitation center. It’s a community of like-minded individuals from multiple generations coming together for the purpose of living a healthier and better way of life. We strive to ensure that we provide not only the best possible quality care, amenities and programming, but also the best possible sensory environment for their stay. At Norterre, we pride ourselves on bringing music, art and nutrition together with medically integrated programs and physician-directed therapies to inspire, motivate, and promote healing. Our goal is to help people be the healthiest, strongest and happiest versions of themselves.”

AURORA Health & Wellness Center at NORTERRE (1280x

As one of the first major steps toward encouraging and building a healthy lifestyle throughout the Northland, Norterre is pleased to announce the launch of its Action Steps Wellness program for corporate memberships. Norterre is a health and wellness destination built with heart and vision to help people improve total health, mind and body outcomes. Working with medical professionals and fitness experts, Norterre created a perfect way to boost employee engagement, improve employee health and increase the return on investment for the company. The Norterre team understands that when healthy behaviors are created, health risks decrease, and as a result, so does chronic disease – which leads to healthier, happier families and communities.

As the cost of employee medical coverage continues to rise while employee health declines, Norterre will partner with employers to assist employees in becoming their personal best through customized programs designed to meet their own wellness and health goals. It will provide employees at companies throughout Kansas City, Clay County and the surrounding Northland area with education, awareness, tools, wellness strategies, technology and social support needed to adopt and maintain healthy behaviors and ensure a long-lasting positive impact on their lives. When implemented, corporate wellness programs have been proven to reduce healthcare costs to the company by 33 percent and decrease absenteeism by 15 percent. In addition to saving the company money and improving company morale, employees also spend 10 percent less on prescriptions and 13 percent less on physician visits. At a time when health care costs are impacting every household, Norterre offers a true solution.

“Norterre is a health and wellness destination that has started a movement to put healthy living at the center of everyday life. Our goal is to empower companies, inspire families, and motivate individuals throughout the Northland to make healthy choices. We know that in the process, together we can create a healthier community,” said Steve Shields, chairman and managing partner of Norterre. “This isn’t about another diet and exercise short term fix.  It’s a lifestyle, a way of thinking, a way of living. We know that when employees participate in these programs, stress, blood pressure and other precursors for disease are reduced. But we’re taking it one step further than just a program; we’re getting to the heart of the matter by personalizing each program to each employee. That’s the only way we can truly make a difference.”

As a part of this wellness initiative, corporate members will receive annual biometric screenings at The Aurora – Norterre’s Health and Wellness Center. The Norterre Navigation Team assigned to each member will work with an individual to create a personalized plan depending on health needs and goals. Health coaches and medical program coordinators from the personal navigation teams will create and discuss appropriate programming to guide each individual through plans tailored to their individual health needs. These coaches and coordinators will use nutrition and lifestyle information to recommend and refer individuals based on their glucose and cholesterol levels, body mass index, and nutrition.

“Our Active Steps Wellness program is more than just the ordinary group membership discount plan.  It takes a scientific and technological approach combined with ongoing metrics and blends it all together with a compassionate team designed to actually help individuals get to a better health index.  As their milestones are achieved, the plans are adjusted to personally align with the individual’s progress every step of the way,” adds Melissa O’Hare, chief operating officer of Norterre. Melissa is personally involved in the design of The Aurora’s programming and medical integration.  Her background includes medical technology and services, fitness training and education, and patient and rehab services care.  “Norterre is a new way of looking at health and wellness. Our goal is to bring that vision to life throughout the corporate world in KC. If we can improve health awareness and get past fitness apathy, we will be well on our way to becoming the healthiest city in the country.”

Program members will also receive access to the entire 65,000-square-foot fitness and exercise facility of The Aurora Health and Wellness Center, which includes classes such as Zumba, Pilates, Yoga, Tai Chi, as well as cardio rehab, a 400 meter running/walking track, locker rooms with whirlpools, saunas and steam baths, warm water exercise, therapy and 25 meter lap pools, physical therapy clinic, personal trainers, spin studio and a demonstration kitchen. A child care center is also located on-site, so parents can focus on their health and wellness.

As part of the Action Steps Wellness Program, Norterre will offer ActionZone, a fully integrated website and phone app for iPhone and Android which all corporate members will receive. The app is customizable to each person with personal health assessment and screening information, and can also sync up with personal fitness devices, such as Garmin, Fitbit, or Nike+Fuel Bands. Action Zone will incorporate personal goals and user activity reports, and will encourage users to make and track positive, healthy changes in behavior. Spouses and partners can also be added to the account. Companies can promote their wellness program on this app as well by highlighting certain goals, and promote health and fitness challenges that are customized for them, while employees can receive a “reward” for reaching benchmarks. These benefits can be announced internally, tracked, and reminder notices can be provided to the employee to help with motivation through the app.  Norterre has made it easy for the company to track, administer, and monitor their health cost reductions while providing a cost benefit to their employees.

In addition, Norterre will offer integrated clinical specialty pathways designed for prevention of disease, addressing heart health, weight management, strength and balance.  As part of a comprehensive corporate wellness program, Norterre will have ongoing medically-directed therapies that address cancer recovery, stroke rehabilitation, and arthritis and pain management. The beauty of Norterre is that employees who are trying to lose weight and get healthier will have the support they need, while improving their self-esteem and turning them into happier and even more productive employees. Employees or family members who are recovering from serious issues, medical treatments, or planned surgeries will have the support they need, improving their strength and wellbeing so that they feel more empowered and in control of their situation.  Through the customized approach Norterre takes to address each individual in a personalized way, employees are able to find the inspiration and motivation to get better, feel better and be stronger.

“It is important to us to create a way for employers to not just encourage healthier lifestyles, but to help employees understand and change behaviors for themselves,” adds Shields. “We believe that by making the process easy to navigate, it is more likely that the person will continue to push for internal change and improvement. With this program, the employee and employer both benefit from these initiatives, because when people feel better, they will be more productive and miss less work due to illness. We are looking for employers in the area who share our vision to partner with us and provide a solution for a healthier lifestyle.”

Norterre, a highly anticipated first-of-its-kind health and wellness community, is being built to inspire people of all generations to reach personal milestones together in a supportive environment. As excitement builds for the inaugural multi-generational neighborhood, Norterre recently commemorated the opening of its Welcome Center with a ribbon cutting and two open house events. The Welcome Center is located on the lower floor of the Liberty Clinic (2609 Glenn Hendren Drive, Suite G100 in Liberty). These celebrations are symbolic acts meant to highlight a new culture of living in which people of all ages share life and motivate one another to be healthier and happier. The Welcome Center is designed to provide more information on the Norterre development so that prospective residents, health-and-fitness-minded Northlanders, doctors, medical teams and even corporate executives can learn more about being a part of something truly greater than simply being a member of a gym, a patient at a rehab facility or a resident of an apartment.

“At Norterre, different generations will come together to experience life in an environment that encourages all aspects of healthy living. This neighborhood will truly be unique, and we hope to set the standard for how we live, heal and age in the Northland,” said Steve Shields, chairman and managing partner of Norterre. “We are opening this fall, and the Welcome Center will give people a chance to learn more about us. We have met many people who are interested in this innovative concept and we cannot wait to share our vision.”

The first phase of Norterre will debut with the 65,000-square-foot Aurora Health and Wellness Center, The Laurel (with 60 assisted living residences, 20 dedicated to assisted living memory support), and The Estoria (with 20 long-term care residences and 40 short-term stay suites for individuals of all ages going through rehabilitation), as well as retail, child care and healthy dining.

The Aurora Health & Wellness Center will feature unique programming and activities will include more than 50 classes per week to create the ultimate wellness destination in the Northland. Unlike anything in the area, world-class athletes will work out alongside patients going through rehabilitation, parents will attend yoga, spin or nutrition classes while their children enjoy supervised play in an on-site child care center, and everyone will support each other’s efforts in reaching personal goals. Any adult can join as a member, and companies are encouraged to sign up for corporate memberships to create internal health initiatives. The Aurora’s classes will include yoga and Pilates, cardiac and strength training, and spin. Norterre’s “Navigation Team,” made up of on-site personal trainers and health coaches, will create customized wellness plans for each member. There will be an elevated running and walking track, high-impact studio, stretching area, warm water exercise, therapy and lap pools, spa with salon services, massage and other treatments and a demonstration kitchen emphasizing healthy food preparation and nutrition. In honor of the grand opening of the Welcome Center, the $100 membership fee for Aurora will be waived for any Northland-area resident who is 18 or older and who signs up by August 31.

“The Aurora Health & Wellness Center is a place where people of all ages will come together to enhance their overall well-being, boost their fitness routine, supplement a nutritional diet, rejuvenate with programs such as yoga and Pilates, socialize and support each other’s wellness goals, undergo rehabilitative therapy that builds strength and courage, learn about wellness and reach personal milestones,” said Melissa O’Hara, chief operating officer of Norterre. “This isn’t just a gym, it isn’t just a place for rehab and it isn’t just another bistro – this is a comprehensive approach to healthy living and it is a part of a greater vision. This is a place where athletes can train, adults can get wellness tips and try new forms of exercise and seniors can maintain strength and mobility. Activities are tracked in an exclusive app, Action Zone, and monitored by appropriate staff and trainers to make sure goals are set and met in order to keep members motivated toward the path of personal wellness.”

Norterre will also showcase its 120 residences at the Welcome Center with exterior and interior renderings, as well as floor plans illustrating the choice of three Household model options for the three levels of residential care. This unique concept is designed to replace the institutional floor plans of the past with a beautiful residence, comfortable living and individual freedom. The unique physical environment honors privacy, fosters interpersonal relationships, and promotes a quality lifestyle. At each level of care, a Household is home to 20 private apartments adorned with original art and designer furnishings, making each Household as unique as the residents. The Laurel will be home to 60 assisted living residential suites and The Estoria will home to 60 short-term recovery and rehabilitation suites.

Norterre will help people become greater than, better than and stronger than they are now. Anyone who is interested in learning more is encouraged to visit the Welcome Center which is open regularly from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday and by apptointment. To learn more about Norterre or the Welcome Center, visit Norterre.org or call 816-479-4793.

From across Missouri, Kansas and other parts of the Midwest, artists submitted hundreds of pieces covering all subjects and mediums to Norterre for consideration during its recent “Call for Art.” Developers are proud to announce two Liberty artists – Shawn Garland and Beth Stiefer -- as some of the first few artists selected to have their creations featured in the unique multigenerational neighborhood. For these women, the opportunity to enhance the lives of people of all generations brings great purpose to their life’s work and passion. Hundreds of pieces of art will inspire and motivate those who live, heal and play at Norterre. The first-of-its-kind development’s leadership believes the hand-selected art will spark dialogue and stimulate the senses through an emotional connection both inside and outside across the neighborhood.

“Just as we all have art in our own homes, Norterre’s art will provide comfort, inspiration and positive emotions. We are excited to incorporate art made right here in Liberty, and it will bring joy to all who come to the neighborhood,” said Steve Shields, chairman and managing partner of Norterre. “Norterre will be a collection of a life well-lived, including interiors and designs that provide purpose and enthusiasm to those who will live here and visit. We’re not just using art for the sake of filling the spaces, but rather as a tool to engage generations and create conversation. I am handpicking the art in our collection, and it will bring all generations together as they seek wellness and live their best lives.”

Shawn Garland started painting as a child alongside her grandmothers who were both accomplished painters. She went on to study art at the University of South Florida, but started creating art more consistently about 20 years ago. Her primary medium is acrylic and acrylic gels, but she also works in stained glass, silk painting, watercolors, pen and ink, caricatures and wood burning. Norterre selected three paintings from her “Affirmation” series of floral acrylics depicting a Magnolia, Peace Lily and Bird of Paradise.

“Over the years I have worked with seniors in the area to offer painting classes at senior living communities to share the benefits of art as a therapeutic tool,” said Garland. “Creating and looking at art truly does have a healing quality. I am thrilled to be a part of this project, and I am pleased that the developers of Norterre see the benefits of sharing art with people of all ages.”

Beth Stiefer, the second Liberty artist, loves the historic charm of the area, which inspires her watercolor artwork. She paints scenes of life in Liberty, depicting the buildings, streets and statues that give the city its charm. Stiefer enjoys showcasing her artwork, and she is honored to have it placed in city buildings in Liberty, such as City Hall, through connections she established in the area, like Joe Crownover with Four Corners Framed Art.

“The buildings of Liberty are iconic, and they are meaningful for people who live here. I hope that these images will spark conversation between visitors and residents, leading them to reminisce about the town and share their favorite memories,” said Stiefer. “I’m so glad that Norterre chose my artwork, and I am pleased that the paintings are staying in Liberty for people who love the city to see each and every day.”

In total, more than 1,000 pieces of regional art – ranging from murals to ceramics, textiles, sculpture, paintings, metalwork and more – will fill the master planned health and wellness community. The first phase of Norterre will include the Healthy Living Center, which will be open to adults of all ages who will come together to work out, take yoga classes, socialize, build strength, receive physical therapy, learn about wellness and reach personal milestones in a supportive environment unlike any other. Anyone can join, and corporate memberships will help companies create personalized wellness programs. In addition, assisted living residences, assisted living memory support residences, long-term care residences and short-term rehabilitation suites for all ages will be built. Norterre will provide an ideal health care delivery model in which navigation teams will coordinate care plans to enhance overall health in the Northland. At Norterre, the goal is to improve patient outcomes, reduce hospital admissions and readmissions, as well as help people in the area recover and rehabilitate. The first phase is expected to open late summer of 2017. Construction of the second phase is planned to immediately follow with independent living and non-age-specific housing options.
