Hike and Explore W.G. Jones State Forest

Seemingly overlooked amongst the suburban sprawl lies W.G. Jones State Forest resting on over 1,700 acres near the intersection of Highway 242 and FM 1488.

Recreational opportunities include bird watching, hiking, horseback riding, biking, picnics, and wildlife viewing. W.G. Jones State Forest was purchased in 1926 and named after W. Goodrich Jones in 1948 who was considered the Father of Texas Forestry.

The Sweetleaf Nature Trail is just shy of a mile long and is a hiking/jogging path with a picnicking area along Rice Branch Creek. The main trail system is 15 miles long and can be traversed by bike, horseback, or foot. The forest and recreation areas are open daily, and there is no camping on site. The gates close each evening at dark. To use the amenities of Jones State Forest, park-goers must sign-in at the entrance gate.

Jones State Park is littered with red-cockaded woodpecker clusters that roost sites in living trees. The red-cockaded woodpecker is one of two woodpecker species protected by the Endangered Species Act. Among the other wildlife population at the Jones State Forest that can be observed include bats, bluebirds, bees, and butterflies.
