The Village of Grogan’s Mill was established in 1974 and was the first neighborhood in The Woodlands. Similar to Cochran’s Crossing, it too was named after the Grogan-Cochran Lumber Mill. Today, Grogan’s Mill occupies the land south of Town Center and the East Shore.

Recreation

Grogan’s Mill is home to twelve parks with various amenities. The only park with a pool in Grogan’s Mill is located at Sawmill Park. The park pool is a sprayground, a favorite for the little ones as there are plenty of things to play with to keep them busy. The park also features a volleyball court, lighted basketball court, and one baseball/softball field. There’s a play area for the kids, picnic tables, a covered pavilion and five lighted tennis courts. Besides Sawmill Park, Tamarac Park features a dog-friendly play area as well as a wheel-friendly skate/bmx park. Millbend Linear Park also features a jogging track and is located off N. Millbend Drive.

Beyond local public parks, Grogan’s Mill is home to the Woodlands Resort and Conference Center with nearly endless amenities. Additionally, there are a few golf courses including The Oaks and the Tournament Course which are part of The Woodlands Country Club.

Shopping

The Village of Grogan’s Mill has one shopping center located at the intersection of Grogan’s Mill and South Millbend Drive. This shopping center is anchored by a Randall’s Supermarket, and contains a Becks Prime, Brothers Pizza, Fuddrucker’s, Chef Chan’s Chinese Food, Woodforest National Bank and other shops and restaurants. There is also a Farmer’s Market open every Saturday from 8am to noon at 7 Switchbud Place, which is in the same area as the shopping center.

Schools

There are a number of schools within the Grogan’s Mill Village. Elementary schools include Hailey and Lamar, while Wilkerson Intermediate and Knox Junior High are also located here. There are also various pre-school and day care centers available in this and surrounding villages.

Alden Bridge Park is located at 7725 Alden Bridge Drive and features four lighted tennis courts, soccer field, catch and release fishing at the lake, on-site restrooms, eleven picnic tables, BBQ pits and a playground for the kids. There is also a sand volleyball court located on the lakeside perimeter of the tennis courts.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, take a seat under the 36’ x 48’ covered pavilion complete with electrical connections. Of course, once you’ve waited thirty minutes, head over to the pool by taking the footbridge over the dam. Walk past the lighted basketball court on your right and the pool will be on your left.

The Alden Bridge Pool is also known as the “Butterfly Pool” named after the themed waterslide in the kiddie pool. The “adult” side features a trifecta of slides that the children and parents can enjoy. There are a number of lined swim lanes for those looking to get their exercise in. Maximum depth for most of the pool is 5 feet, but there is also a shallow end on the “adult” side, perfect for playing games with the kids. On safety break, take a walk over to the lakeside of the pool and look over the edge to do some turtle spotting.

There is plenty of seating available at the pool throughout, as well as picnic tables located under the pavilion, which makes it a perfect place for parties or events. Finally, there are restrooms and outdoor showers on site to clean off before and after the swim.

discgolf

There are three golf courses immediately within The Woodlands, and a few others that are within close proximity to us.

For those who may not be familiar, disc golf is a game played with special Frisbees, or discs, which must be thrown at a target. Much like golf, the objective is to complete the course with the fewest number of throws of your disc(s).

The game is typically played with a few discs. A golfers bag may contain a long range driver, intermediate range disc, and a putter for shorter shots. Discs can be picked up for $10-30 each depending on the quality at many sporting goods stores. Although modeled after golf, it is not nearly as time sensitive of a game and 18 holes can often be completed in two hours or less.

The most robust course in The Woodlands in terms of tees, landscape, and water hazards is located at the Bear Branch Sports Complex on Research Forest across from the Bear Branch Recreation Center. The course features 18 baskets and a par of 54 for the course. The course begins with the first tee-box next to the sidewalk leading down to the pond on the south side of the park. Water is in play on a number of holes towards the beginning and middle of the round as the course snakes around the perimeter of Bear Branch Sports Park.

Terramont Park is home to the second disc golf course in The Woodlands. Unveiled in 2005 and designed by Jake Walsdorf (the same designer as the Bear Branch course), this course features significant elevation changes and a lightly wooded atmosphere. This course features only nine holes and remains at a par of 27. Most people play the course twice, as understanding the course layout can be a bit tricky for a first-timer with the elevation changes. Be careful though, Terramont is a shared park so keep an eye out for pedestrians and people that may be unaware of disc golfing activity.

Finally, the last course is located at Stonebridge Church, which can be found off Research Forest Drive or accessed from FM 1488. This course offers disc golfers a full round of 18 holes on predominantly flat and semi-wooded acreage. Once again, par remains at 54 with a mix of doglegs and a lake that comes into play on three holes.

If you are new to the sport and want to get some practice in without too many people around, Stonebridge may be your best bet. To read up more about each course and to get some reviews from people who have played it, click the links below.

lakeconroe

Located less than 30 minutes north of The Woodlands, Lake Conroe is a favorite weekend destination for many locals. With over 22,000 surface acres of water extending 26 miles in length, there is ample space to kick back and relax.

Lake Conroe is available year round for early morning fishing adventures and rides on the lake. Rent a boat and cruise the open waters for the afternoon, or bring along a tube to “up” the excitement level. If you’re interests are more land-based, Lake Conroe is getting increasingly more attention for their unique and high quality golf courses.

Lake Conroe has seen tremendous growth over the years from master-planned communities like The Woodlands as well as their close proximity to the city of Houston. Lake Conroe was actually built in 1973 to serve as the reserve drinking water supply for the City of Houston. Home to over 157 miles of shoreline, Lake Conroe has experienced tremendous growth from various housing developments and communities including Bentwater and Walden.

In the mood for a hearty meal after a long day on the lake? Stop off at Ransom’s Steakhouse or Fajita Jacks, both located just off Highway 105 between Montgomery and Conroe before the short ride home.

There’s so much to do on Lake Conroe, and you can find much more information at www.lakeconroe.com.
